Let’s start with the word freelance. My business coach tells me my first mistake is including the word free in my description. “Freelance” will help search engine results but call yourself an independent writer whenever possible to avoid all confusion. In case you don’t understand why that’s troublesome, free means clients think they get content for free. Some will try bartering, some will ask for “economic” discounts with a package – don’t fall for it. From my experience, that can just lead to headache and ruined relationships.
Don’t underestimate your value as a writer. Whether you are writing a fictional novel or factual business content, you have to put food on the table too. Our service may not be the first thing people think of when they want to start a project, but is often one of the most integral pieces.
Figure your pricing system out early. Once you’ve qualified your services and someone is interested in hiring you, this tends to be the first question they’ll ask. How much do you charge? If you don’t have something nailed down and can’t confidently discuss this topic on the spot, you’ll lose business. Research what other writers are charging in your market to determine what you feel most comfortable with. Decide if you want to develop a pricing package based on hourly or packaged rates and what circumstances might change those prices.
I’ve learned that asking for 50% upfront is not unreasonable. In fact, this prevents you from losing money on any deal. When you are working on a larger project you might set up a payment plan so you get paid throughout the project, but definitely get some type of payment before you even pick up a pen (or laptop, come on let’s be efficient). Trust me, if you don’t you will most likely be fighting for money for weeks or months to follow. Invoice the remainder once writing project is complete. Finally, make friends with a collections agency. Depending on who you work with, they can become your best friend. Remember that food that has to keep showing up on the table? They help it stay there!Payment can be a challenge; even with those you would least expect to have trouble with. I hope these tips make it easier to get started.
